Today will be spent in the Serengeti with morning and afternoon game drives. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth. The essential features of climate, vegetation and fauna have barely changed in the past million years. Some patterns of life, death, adaptation and migration are as old as the hills themselves. It is the annual migration for which Serengeti is perhaps most famous. Over a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern hills to the southern plains (between July and October). So strong is the ancient instinct to move that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back. BLD

Day 10. Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area home to the famous volcanic Ngorongoro Crater which is the largest unbroken caldera in the world. En-route visit the Olduvai Gorge site of archeological findings, where traces of pre-historic man dating back to 3.5 million years ago have been discovered. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon at leisure.

Tanzania has implemented nature conservation rules limiting visitors to half-day exploration of the Crater. The crater (610 metres deep and 260km squared) is a microcosm of East African scenery and game. There are 25,000 larger animals within the crater itself, mostly zebra and wildebeest. However, this is undoubtedly the best place in Tanzania to see black rhino as well as prides of lion that include the black-maned males. Your 4X4 vehicle will take you down the steep walls of the caldera into the crater itself in search of the "Big 5". After your visit to the Crater, return to your lodge where your afternoon is at leisure. BLD
