Marangu Route 6 Nights/7 days

Tour Summary/ Features:

The popular Marangu route will get almost any reasonably fit person to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. You do not need any specialised mountaineering equipment or experience to reach the summit via this route. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and is the highest walkable summit in the world. The peaks of Mawenzi (5132 m) and Kibo (5895 m) have permanent snow and ice. On the climb, you move from a tropical to an arctic environment in a just a few days. You first pass through lush rainforests, before reaching heather and open moorland. Further upwards you reach the almost lunar landscape of an alpine desert between the two peaks.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Arusha - Moshi
Drive from Arusha to Moshi, at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight at Springland Hotel or similar

Day 2: Marangu Gate - Mandara Hut
You make an early start with a drive to Marangu gate. Begin trek in the morning through the rain forest for 3-4 hours to Mandara Hut (2700 metres).

Day 3: Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut
After breakfast, leave the glades of the rain forest and continue trekking past the Maundi Crater into open rolling moorland. The trek takes about 5-6 hours to Horombo Hut (3720 m) for overnight.

Day 4: Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut
After a good nights rest, trek past the last water point to reach Kibo saddle, a broad desert zone between the two peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Kibo Hut (4725m) is reached in 5-6 hours.

Day 5: Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut
The start for the summit is made just after midnight. The steepest part of the route is to Gillman's point (5700m), which takes 5-6 hours. Another 90 minutes of groveling through the snow and you are at Uhuru Peak (5895m) - the highest point in Africa! After taking a few photos to record your achievement, commence the descent taking about 5-6 hours to reach Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate-Moshi
The day is spent descending to the Marangu, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day congratulating yourself and relaxing after the strenuous trek.

Day 7: Moshi - Arusha
After breakfast, drive to Arusha.

Remarks : The above prices are based on a minimum of 2 persons. A price reduction is available for numbers above two persons. When arranging for your international air tickets, note that it is usually cheaper to disembark at Nairobi in Kenya. You then take a shuttle bus to Arusha at a cost of US$ 20. This shuttle bus leaves at 0800 and 1400 hrs daily from either Nairobi or Arusha. The drive takes 5 hours. If you wish to make use of this option, please indicate so.
